"There is a period of "spontaneous healing" after which the survivor may be left with residual deficits that he may compensate for through learned changes in his behavior."

REHAB CENTERS   [ back to Recovering from a Brain injury ]
Rehabilitation Services are delivered as follows. Acute Rehabilitation is provided in the hospital setting. Subacute Rehabilitation is provided for an extended period of time after hospital discharge, often in a skilled nursing facility. Postacute Rehabilitation is provided in the community and is geared to helping clients practice compensatory strategies as they re-integrate. Rehab services are typically delivered by a transdisciplinary team led by a physician such as a neurologist or physiatrist. The team typically includes people with professional degrees (such as neuropsychologists; speech, cognitive, occupational and physical therapists; and vocational rehabilitation counselors), and paraprofessionals (who work in the health field but do not have a professional degree). In 1996 the Brain Injury Association established the AACBIS (the American Academy for the Certification of Brain Injury Specialists) to train and certify paraprofessionals in professional delivery of rehab services to clients with a TBI. Between 1996-2000 AACBIS has certified over 135 persons. Institutional providers of rehab services may or may not seek accreditation by CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities). Having CARF Accreditation is a plus. Being failed by CARF is a minus. Post-acute facilities in the community typically do not seek CARF accreditation, and as to those, the lack of such accreditation is not important, unless they tried and failed to get it.
