BOOSTS SHORT-TERM MEMORY [ back
to What's New ]
Anecdotal information now suggests that use of the prescription
drug Donepezil can be helpful in alleviating the functional
severity of short term memory impairment following TBI. The
postulated mechanism is blocking the breakdown of AcH (acetylcholine)
leaving more in the central nervous system for short term
memory processing. Three week trials on a two patients showed
good enhancement of short term memory akin to what is sometimes
seen with Alzheimer's patients who take the drug. However,
the authors of the study caution that the sample size was
far too low to permit any solid, scientific conclusions at
this time.
