fMRI  [ back to Glossary Index ]
fMRI or functional MRI uses extremely high speed magnetic-resonance imaging of minute changes in blood oxygenation in selected brain structures during cognitive tasks. The images appear about 5-8 seconds behind real time changes. The technique is used to guide rehabilitation of persons with brain damage (from TBI, stroke and other conditions) and enables neurosurgeons to map the locus of critical brain functions before surgery. fMRI is also used by neuro-scientists to compare brain functioning across different genders, age groups and any other variables they choose. The technique is harmless, non-invasive and cheaper than PET scans.
